Fantastic map, with a great sense of location and narrative. A little primitive at times, but that arguably enhances the feeling of playing through a low-budget 1970s sci-fi film. The reskinned monsters work really well overall; the ogres surprisingly so.
Impressive taking into account its age, the atmosphere is top notch an there0s a nice atmosphere.
i too prefer the monsters with increased health. very nice.
Starship on The Quake Grave
It's hard to tell what you're going to get with older maps, even when it's decently rated here, but Starship it a must play! The custom skins, events, textures and locations really make it feel like you're trying to escape from some crazy space prison. So yea, go play it if you haven't already!
The construction standard is a bit bland and rough around the edges by today's lofty standards, but this is an excellent map. The custom skins and textures keep things fresh and interesting, gameplay is fairly satisfying and there are lots of interesting and novel ideas injected into the map. The ending is cool!
Wow,
The whole fact this is a 1997 release just makes me speechless. This is some crazy work and I personally feel is still relevant today. Custom monsters are fantastic, the spaceship feel hits home, and there are even dashes of humor strewn throughout.
I agree with others when they say to go play it!
Extremely impressive, especially for 1997! One of the most complete re-imaginings of Quake that I have seen from that early era, with interesting game mechanics including the within-level variable gravity that we later saw in Glassman's Colony. Lots of neat little touches that are way ahead of their time, like the opening of the game and the ending animation. Another for the "underappreciated gem" category.
this was made in 1997?? wow...neat little space map!
I feel this is Neal Manke's best solo map release for quake. It has custom skins which gives most of the quake enemies new looks that match the space theme of the level. It also has great level design, numerous secrets for the player to discover, new texture and impressive brushwork design. It also uses the environment and as well as text to illustrate a story to player who is playing through the level. One negative aspect to the level however is how excessively dark the level is which can make it difficult in discovering the secrets hidden within the level. Overall this is a very impressive map for when it was released and i would highly recommend downloading and playing through this short custom mod for quake. I would give this map a five rating.
