The Quake Team Fortress Reunion!
- by Slick

Remember last year when we had a week long celebration for Quake Team Fortress's 3rd Birthday? Well, I was trying to rack my brain to think of how to top it. To be quite honest, it proved to be a hard task, especially since not too many people play Quake Team Fortress (yes, some of you do play it exclusively (Avenger for one, who always bugs me to make the polls more uniTF)) But for the most part, we have moved on to TFC or some other incarnation of the game, or Counter-Strike to balance our skills that will be needed for TF2. That didn't leave many options, but then McRackin told me he scheduled a game with Robin Walker for the 24th. "Son of a motherless goat!" I exclaimed with great relish, "That's it!" Indeed it was, for now would we not talk about the game that started it all. But we would now all go back and play it.

The idea turned out better than planned. For now McRackin told me to get a bunch of friends to join in on the game, it was quite interesting finding out how many online friends I had who I'd want to invite, and also how many claimed to be my friends to get in on the action. (A move they will regret let me assure you!) So anyway after getting a hold of all the old vets (and I mean all) these people still had Quake and checked their email enough to get in on the action: DieHard, Robin 'Lint of Death!!' Walker, John 'Jojie' Cook, McRackin, Cableless|GT, Newby, Gunny[END]-eg-, MC- R3VZ3MP03, Slick, Spyro, StealthRT, FortySeven[BTEG], Enon`, Twiz, Nemesis, [CPF]Shock-E-, [P]Infidel, Fuel[BTEG], Dock [OSKI], Vane, [BKB]Popp, Mare and Falcon. Hopefully we didn't miss anyone, (if we did just let us know). Totentanz and Midori stopped by for the chat part and hung out for a while, but didn't play. It's a shame the others I tried to get a hold of couldn't make it, but hey it happens.

I'm sure the other people have great stories about trying to find quake on the computer, or on the cd somewhere in the house and then re-downloading TF, re-creating their scripts (not that easy TFC hit the sentry business here!) and getting Dox's models -- Between DieHard and myself alone we could write 4 articles on the adventures of "Getting Quake 1 in the year 2000." After finding that I couldn't get my pentium 60 to find any other computers let alone it's own keyboard on the network, I looked for the cd in my stash. As it turned out my brother had weaseled it away for himself, not finding it anywhere I ventured out to buy it again (figured it would be cheap) and after searching a grand total of 27 software stores looking for it) it was quite the adventure.

Anyshags, people were on IRC before the game by a couple hours and as each extra person stopped by hoots and hollers and memories were passed around while were waited for the start and Robin and John to show.

The game itself was great, we played on 2fort5r, and well6. Great fun was had by all. You can check out some demo's recorded by Slick [2fort5r ~ 1.5mb, Well6 ~ 750kb] or DieHard [2fort5r ~ 3.4 mb]. A lot of old clan tags were shown and a few new ones were flying as well. As for the actual games, it seemed like to everyone they didn't matter. Everyone was happy to see some old friends and get together a lot more jokes were made about how TFC has spoiled our TF skills than we were concerned about playing. I noticed in my demo that John Cook laid me out one time on 2Fort5r. That makes me proud :)

Playing this game brought back my love for Quake Team Fortress, and I'm going to be playing it more often along with TFC. DieHard Enon` and myself had a blast playing a game the day before to brush up. Remembering the feel, the old sounds, Deathmessages, Dark Shadows to hid in, end map score shots. If you still can play QTF, do it. You won't regret the memories.

All in all, it was a great way to remember Quake TeamFortress' 4th Birthday, many thanks go to McRackin for the idea (make sure to click all around TF Funnies to make him happy!) I hope to be able to do it again with Robin and John (Ian too if we were really on the ball of getting people in on it) next year!
